Life Sketch(english) of Hon'ble Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith
Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, a renowned economist, diplomat, freedom fighter and
language veteran, was born in a respected Muslim family of Sylhet in 1934.
Mr. Muhith is the second son of Advocate Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz, MABL who was a
great leader of Pakistan movement and one of the
founder of Sylhet District Muslim League. His mother Syed Shahar Banu Chowdhury
was also active in politics and social service.
Mr. Muhith was very brilliant throughout his student life. He secured first
place in Intermediate examination in 1951 from Sylhet MC College. He stood
first class first in B.A (Hons.) in English literature in 1954 from Dhaka
University and passed his M.A with credit from the same university in 1955.
During his service period, he studied at Oxford University in 1957-58 and
received MPA Degree from Harvard University in 1964.
After
joining Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1956, he served in different
departments of East Pakistan, Central Pakistan and then Bangladesh.
He was appointed Secretary of Planning Division in 1972 and Secretary of the
External Resource Division of Finance and Planning Ministry in 1977.
During his
service as the Chief and Deputy Secretary of Pakistan Planning Commission, he
made a report on the discrimination between East and West Pakistan and that was
the first report submitted to the National Assembly in 1966. He was the first
diplomat of Washington Embassy who transferred his allegiance to Bangladesh
during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Mr. Muhith
has earned outstanding reputation in economic diplomacy. He has
been a recognized figure in World Bank, IMF, IDB and in different organizations
of United Nations.
He went for
self retirement in 1981 from his service and then started his second innings of
glorious career as a specialist in economics and development in the
International arena. He became Finance and Planning Minister of Bangladesh in
1982-1983. Next he worked as a Consultant in different institutions of WB and
the UN. He was a Visiting Fellow of W. Wilson School in Princeton University in
1984 and 1985.
Mr. Muhith
is equally skilled as a writer. He has published 21 books on different subjects
including administration, history, liberation war, governance and
environment.
He is a
pioneer of Bangladesh Environment Movement and was also the founder President
of POROSH and later BAPA.
Mr. Muhith
is married. His wife Syed Sabia Muhith is a designer. They are parents of two
sons and a daughter. Their daughter Samina Muhith is a Banker and specialist in
monetary policy sector. Their elder son Shahed Muhith is an architect and
younger Son Samir Muhith is a school teacher.
Mr. Muhith
took oath as the Finance Minister of Bangladesh Government on 6 January,
2009.

অর্থনীতিবিদ, কূটনীতিক, ভাষা-সৈনিক ও মুক্তিযোদ্ধা আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিত ১৯৩৪ সালে
সিলেটের এক সম্ভ্রান্ত মুসলিম পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।
জনাব মুহিত পাকিস্তান আন্দোলনের অন্যতম নেতা, তৎকালীন
সিলেট জেলা মুসলিম লীগের কর্ণধার এডভোকেট আবু আহমদ আব্দুল হাফিজের দ্বিতীয় পুত্র।
তাঁর মা সৈয়দ শাহার বানু চৌধুরীও রাজনীতিতে সক্রিয় ছিলেন।
জনাব মুহিত ছাত্রজীবনে অত্যন্ত মেধাবী ছিলেন। তিনি ১৯৫১ সালে সিলেট এমসি কলেজ থেকে
আইএ পরীক্ষায় প্রথম স্থান, ১৯৫৪ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে
বিএ(অনার্স) পরীক্ষায় প্রথম শ্রেণীতে প্রথম এবং ১৯৫৫ সালে একই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে
কৃতিত্বের সাথে এমএ পাশ করেন। চাকুরিরত অবস্থায় তিনি অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে
অধ্যয়নসহ হার্ভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে এমপিএ ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন।
১৯৫৬ সালে পাকিস্তান সিভিল সার্ভিস-এ (সিএসপি) যোগদানের পর জনাব মুহিত তৎকালীন
পূর্ব পাকিস্তান, কেন্দ্রীয় পাকিস্তান এবং পরবর্তীতে বাংলাদেশে সরকারের বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে দায়িত্ব্ পালন করেন। বাংলাদেশে ১৯৭২ সালে তিনি পরিকল্পনা সচিব এবং ১৯৭৭ সালে অর্থ ও পরিকল্পনা মন্ত্রণালয়ের বহিঃসম্পদ বিভাগে
সচিব পদে নিযুক্ত হন।
জনাব মুহিত পাকিস্তান পরিকল্পনা কমিশনের চীফ ও উপ-সচিব থাকাকালে পূর্ব ও পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের মধ্যে
বৈষম্যের ওপর ১৯৬৬ সালে একটি প্রতিবেদন প্রণয়ন করেন এবং পাকিস্তান জাতীয়
পরিষদে এটিই ছিল এই বিষয়ে প্রথম প্রতিবেদন। ওয়াশিংটন দূতাবাসের তিনি প্রথম
কূটনীতিবিদ, যিনি স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের সময় ১৯৭১-এর জুন মাসে পাকিস্তান পক্ষ পরিত্যাগ
করে বাংলাদেশের পক্ষে আনুগত্য প্রদর্শন করেন।
অর্থনৈতিক কূটনীতিতে জনাব মুহিত সবিশেষ পারদর্শী। বিশ্বব্যাংক ও আন্তর্জাতিক
মুদ্রা তহবিল, ইসলামী উন্নয়ন ব্যাংক ও জাতিসংঘের বিভিন্ন সংস্থায় তিনি একজন পরিচিত
ব্যক্তিত্ব।
১৯৮১ সালে চাকরি থেকে স্বেচ্ছায় অবসর নিয়ে তিনি অর্থনীতি ও উন্নয়ন বিশেষজ্ঞ হিসেবে
ফোর্ড ফাউন্ডেশন ও ইফাদে কাজ শুরু করেন। ১৯৮২-৮৩ সালে অর্থ ও পরিকল্পনা মন্ত্রী
হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। অতঃপর তিনি বিশ্বব্যাংক ও জাতিসংঘের বিভিন্ন
প্রতিষ্ঠানে বিশেষজ্ঞ হিসেবে কাজ করেন। ১৯৮৪ ও ১৯৮৫ সালে তিনি প্রিন্সটন
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভিজিটিং ফেলো ছিলেন।
লেখক হিসেবে জনাব মুহিত সমান পারদর্শী। প্রশাসনিক ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধ বিষয়ক গ্রন্থ
ছাড়াও বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে তাঁর ২১টি গ্রন্থ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।
বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ আন্দোলনে তিনি একজন পথিকৃত এবং বাপার প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি ছিলেন।
জনাব মুহিত বিবাহিত। স্ত্রী সৈয়দ সাবিয়া মুহিত একজন ডিজাইনার। তাঁদের তিন সন্তানের
মধ্যে প্রথম কন্যা সামিনা মুহিত ব্যাংকার ও আর্থিক খাতের বিশেষজ্ঞ, বড় ছেলে সাহেদ
মুহিত বাস্তুকলাবিদ এবং কনিষ্ঠ পুত্র সামির মুহিত শিক্ষকতা করেন।
জনাব মুহিত ৬ জানুয়ারি, ২০০৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের
অর্থমন্ত্রী নিযুক্ত হন।
